Lamar Duo, McNeese’s Palet Garner Weekly Soccer Honors

She has 11 saves and a 0.33 goals-against-average in the team’s last three contests. The Cardinals (4-5, 1-0 SLC) began conference play with a bang, defeating Nicholls 6-0 at home on Saturday night, and look to carry that momentum into a two-match roadtrip against Northwestern State at 7 p.m. CT Friday and versus Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Cowgirls (5-2, 1-0 SLC) topped Southeastern Louisiana 1-0 in both schools’ conference opener on Sunday evening. McNeese will trade off with the Cardinals, taking on Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. Friday before facing Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Sunday. She wasted no time, finding the back of the net in the seventh minute and following with another less than 10 minutes later. After assisting on Esther Okoronkwo’s 22nd-minute score, Ashworth secured the first hat trick of her career in the 30th minute and tacked on her final goal 189 seconds later. FRISCO, Texas – Lamar’s Lucy Ashworth and Sandra Nygard, along with McNeese’s Rachel Palet are the Southland Conference Soccer Players of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Players of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots. The Southland Conference leader in goals (nine) scored each of her school-record four goals in the first 33 minutes of the match. Defensive Player of the Week: Rachel Palet, McNeese – Sr. – Defender – Plano, TexasPalet was an instrumental part of Sunday’s shutout of in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana in which the Lions were limited to just two shots in each half and only one shot on goal the entire match. In just her third game back from an injury, she was credited with the assist on Delana Friesen’s game-winning goal in the 52nd minute. Honorable Mention: None. After finding the back of the net twice in two matches to earn her first weekly recognition on Sept. 17, Ashworth doubled that mark in just one game to repeat as the Offensive Player of the Week.
